Some time ago, I wrote about the state of the “Java vs. .NET” debate some time back. My conclusions where basically that it had pretty much subsided and .NET & C# being the incumbent, had gained the respect from the industry that it sought, or some of it at least. My personal opinion and research showed that while C# and the .NET framework was and continues to be in a constant state of evolution, Java seemed to have slowed in this regard.
Good news, since then JDK 7 was released and they are on the path to releasing JDK 8. You can find out more about this in the following talk from John Rose.
