I’m not sure what the exact figure is, but I’m pretty sure that most of the developing and developed world knows about the popular casual game Angry Birds. Most persons would have also noted the release of a new version of the game this week, “Angry Birds Space”. Notably, or maybe not so notably missing from the platforms that the game will support in the Windows Phone platform.
Interestingly, in an interview that can be found here:
Peter Vesterbacka seems to let it slip that the company is not really focused on or interested in the development of a Windows Phone 7 version of the game. I say slip, because the seems that later there was word from another executive of the company that they are in fact exploring the development of a WP7 version of the game.
I’m pretty sure that the “retraction” came after some pretty rough ** WTF ** calls from the higher-ups at both Microsoft and maybe even more so, Nokia, whose future in the smartphone arena has a whole lot riding on the Windows Phone 7 platform.
For those of you have have Windows Phones, you might recall how long it took for the original Angry Birds to hit the WP7 platform. From the interview, it is clear that due to the almost irrelevant user numbers on the WP7 side (it pains to say it, but it’s the truth) the company is internally not that concerned about the Windows Platform.
Game that are as popular as Angry Birds are critical to the success of the platform. I do think that Microsoft and Nokia should do whatever is necessary to get this game onto their platform NOW! Even if it mean dedicating Microsoft employees to work with Rovio to port the game to WP7.
Let’s see what happens.
